| Zac Efron Doesn’t Even Recognize One of His Songs from High School Musical Posted: 26 Aug 2015 09:15 AM PDT During Cosmopolitan UK‘s interview with Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski and Max Joseph, who are promoting their upcoming film We Are Your Friends, Efron fails to recognize “Breaking Free,” a song he sings with Vanessa Hudgens in the 2006 movie High School Musical. You know, that movie that made him famous? The interviewer tests their music trivia abilities by playing different hits and asking them to guess the name. And around the 1:07 mark, when the High School Musical single comes on, Efron goes blank. Joseph makes the moment even more humiliating by asking the young star, “Is that your voice?” Here’s the full song: We Are Your Friends comes out August 28.

| Let This 3-Year-Old Boy Show You The Right Way to Receive a Gift Posted: 26 Aug 2015 08:46 AM PDT Vine user Jeff Simmons uploaded a clip of his three-year-old nephew unwrapping an avocado, a gag present for his birthday earlier this month. Watch the little one act like it is just great. Simmons and his sister Victoria, who is also the youngster’s mother, told the New York Daily News that they were trying to teach the boy to react politely when people give him presents. They also gave him an oven mitt and coffee K-cup as a test. This is how you receive gifts, people. |
| For National Dog Day, Meet a Hero Dog From 1928 Posted: 26 Aug 2015 08:00 AM PDT In honor of National Dog Day—celebrated on Aug. 26–allow us to look back at the the first nonhuman to be a TIME cover subject: a basset hound puppy who was a born show dog with champion parents. But the story, which was prompted by the 1928 Westminster Kennel Club dog show, took a much broader look at the state of dogs in America. “It would be idle to suppose that the tiny fraction of the U. S. canine population which last week posed and strutted in Madison Square Garden was in any sense the most important,” TIME noted. “Other dogs did not pause last week, in the performance of their deeds and duties, to admire the antics of these prototypes.” Among the canine feats highlighted by TIME was one particularly heroic pooch:

| Watch Kristin Chenoweth Make Conan O’Brien Cry in Pain Posted: 26 Aug 2015 07:49 AM PDT On Conan Tuesday night, Tony-and-Emmy-Award winning actress Kristin Chenoweth tried to clean up Conan O’Brien’s eyebrows — or ‘manscape’ them as the practice is often called. We’re guessing the procedure was plenty uncomfortable as O’Brien’s eyes bugged out and he even started to tear up. Needless to say, the most hilarious part of the sketch was that there did not seem to be anything wrong with his eyebrows in the first place, so all of that trouble was for nothing.

| Here’s What Benedict Cumberbatch’s Mom Had To Say About Her Son’s Hamlet Performance Posted: 26 Aug 2015 05:59 AM PDT The critics may have had mixed reviews of the new production of Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch, but the actor’s mother gave no doubt that she was a fan of her son’s performance, saying her son was “a bloody good Hamlet.” “He was quite lively growing up, but I thought that was phenomenal,” Cumberbatch’s mother Wanda Ventham told the Guardian. She urged critics to declare her son, “a bloody good Hamlet.” The London production of the Shakespeare classic has been a runaway box office success, at least in part due to the fame surrounding Cumberbatch. Still, the production opened to mixed reviews earlier this month. [Guardian] |
| Taylor Swift’s Special Guests Club Adds John Legend, St. Vincent and Beck Posted: 26 Aug 2015 05:48 AM PDT Taylor Swift’s parade of special guests on her 1989 World Tour is pretty genius marketing—few pop stars can make every single night of their tour a news event—but the magic words “Please welcome to the stage…” don’t get any less magical just because they’ve been parodied. The first three of Swift’s Los Angeles shows featured some of her tour’s biggest names—Mary J. Blige, Alanis Morisette and…Joey from Friends?—and Tuesday night’s fourth show added three more: John Legend, Beck and St. Vincent. Legend joined Swift on stage for a duet performance of his hit ballad “All Me,” a surprise that came together last minute. “I found out John and Chrissy were coming thirty minutes before I went on and called Chrissy and asked her if John would perform,” Swift explained. Earlier in the evening, the “Bad Blood” star brought out Beck for a version of his song “Dreams” with St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark, on guitar. In addition to making TIME’s list of the best albums of 2014 with her her self-titled record, St. Vincent has also dated supermodel and Paper Towns actress Cara Delevingne, a noted member of the Taylor Swift #squad. | Bellybutton the Diving Dog Wants You to Celebrate National Dog Day Posted: 26 Aug 2015 05:00 AM PDT On National Dog Day, those who cherish their slobbering, four-legged friends take a moment to offer their companions an extra chin rub. Those who lack a puppy of their own can resort to the next best option: the treasure trove of dog photos that is the Internet. Even decades-old archives have much to offer, including these images of a 3-year-old German shorthaired pointer named Bellybutton, who captured LIFE Magazine’s attention in 1966 with his underwater agility. Bellybutton was unique not for his swimming abilities, but for his willingness to dive to retrieve an object. Most dogs retrieve sticks and balls from the water’s surface, but Bellybutton would go as deep as 20 ft. and remain submerged for up to 15 seconds. He even practiced his skill on his own—one day, LIFE reported, “he dived unbidden into a lake and fetched his master a 10-inch catfish.” Liz Ronk, who edited this gallery, is the Photo Editor for LIFE.com. | The Funk Awakens When Daft Punk Meets Star Wars Posted: 26 Aug 2015 04:56 AM PDT In this sleek new video, Infectious Designer mashed up Star Wars and Daft Punk — and appropriately titled it, “Darth Punk: The Funk Awakens.” In the clip, Darth Vader and Boba Fett get EDM makeovers with glittering helmets ready to reflect the lights at Electric Daisy Carnival. They stalk the streets looking for their prey, eventually facing off with a black-clad street tough who shows no fear — even when they pull out their ultimate Wampa Stompa Mix (on cassette) and prepare their dance battle droid. The video is filled with light sabers and a dance-floor ready soundtrack for those who want to unleash the funk and The Force on the dance floor. |
| ‘Burning Man: The Musical’ Is Now A Thing Posted: 26 Aug 2015 04:27 AM PDT Move over Downton Abbey, James Bond and even you, Donald Trump, there is a new musical in town: Burning Man: The Musical. The comedy musical opened very off-off Broadway — on the internet, specifically — and is only five minutes long, but it packs a lot of action and surprisingly deep character development into its grand opening number. There’s the eager techie boarding a school bus bound for Black Rock City with visions of hanging out with Elon Musk and Google execs in his eyes. There’s the grizzled, wizened hippy and the starry-eyed girl bemoaning the loss of the Burning Man festival that was before “the techies came to plug n’ play” and singing about “when the playa was clean / and techies stayed in SOMA.” All that in just the opening number! The second act offers even more with a tech coder who is trying to develop an app for drone delivery of water at Burning Man and ends up singing a heart-lifting number that asks, “What would Steve Jobs do?” Clearly Steve Jobs would watch this video.
