| Watch Sarah Silverman’s Surprising Dramatic Turn in the Trailer for I Smile Back Posted: 12 Sep 2015 07:55 AM PDT Everything looks generally dandy for Laney (Sarah Silverman) in the first half of the trailer for I Smile Back: a big house in the suburbs, doting children and an adoring husband. But the somber soundtrack and occasional tic on Laney’s face–smiles she’s working a little too hard to keep from disintegrating into frowns–suggest that all is not quite as it seems. The trailer’s second half clues us in to all the ways in which it’s not. I Smile Back is a drama about addiction and mental illness, a 180-degree turn for Silverman, who has made her career as a comedian. Early reviews of the film, which premiered at Sundance and will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, laud Silverman for shedding virtually any trace of her sardonic humor and giving an engrossing, no-holds-barred performance. I Smile Back, which co-stars The Good Wife’s Josh Charles as Laney’s husband, hits theaters Oct. 23. |
| George Clooney Wants Hollywood to Rewrite Men’s Roles for Women Posted: 12 Sep 2015 06:57 AM PDT George Clooney may not have the cure-all for sexism in Hollywood, but at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday, he proposed one surprising simple solution: Rewrite roles originally intended for men to be played by women. In reality, it was Sandra Bullock, not Clooney himself, who inspired this line of thinking, The Wrap reports. When Bullock read the script for Our Brand Is Crisis, a film about an American political consulting firm managing a presidential campaign in Bolivia, she identified a role she was interested in playing. The problem? The role, loosely based on real-life political consultant James Carville, was written for a man to play. Bullock called Clooney, the movie’s co-producer and her Gravity co-star, to inquire about retooling the part so that she might play it. According to Clooney, as soon as Bullock requested to play the part, the movie began moving from development toward production. Many women in Hollywood have been outspoken about the lack of interesting roles for women in film. Their reports are backed by research, including a 2015 study from San Diego State University that found that women comprised just 12% of protagonists in the highest-earning films of 2014. Bullock is one of a handful of top actresses playing gender-switched roles in upcoming movies. Emily Blunt’s FBI agent in Sicario, out Sept. 18, was originally conceived for a man, as was Julia Roberts’ part in the forthcoming Secret in Their Eyes. “There’s a lot more out there if people just started thinking,” Clooney said after Our Brand Is Crisis, which hits theaters Oct. 30, premiered in Toronto. | Justin Bieber Performs Private Concert for Loved Ones of 9/11 Victims Posted: 12 Sep 2015 06:22 AM PDT On Thursday morning, Justin Bieber took the stage at Rockefeller Plaza as part of a scheduled performance for the Today Show’s summer concert series. But for a special group of fans, the show had barely begun. After the concert, Bieber retreated to the Today Show’s green room to play a private concert for fans who lost loved ones on 9/11 and for children involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Bieber played both older songs, like “All That Matters,” and new tracks like “What Do You Mean,” off his forthcoming album, while fans sang along and, in a few cases, shed tears of joy. Through his work with Make-a-Wish, Bieber has granted more than 250 wishes for children with terminal illnesses. You can watch clips of the performance here. [Today] |
| Meet the Woman Who’s Putting Real Curves on the Fashion Runway Posted: 11 Sep 2015 02:24 PM PDT Ashley Graham isn’t your typical model — in fact, she’s working hard to make sure you can’t define what ‘typical model’ means. “I really want to put some actual thick curves on the runway,” she says. The body positive activist is showing her own line of lingerie, which she designed with Addition Elle, in a Sept. 15 runway show at New York Fashion Week that will stray from what many have accepted as the norm by featuring curvier models. The model has long been an advocate for women of all shapes and sizes. Graham says she doesn’t get mad if people call her a “plus-size” model,” but she will roll her eyes. She prefers something a little more flattering: “There are so many adjectives that you could [use to] describe my body, but the one I love is curvy,” she says, laughing over the phone in between appointments leading up to NYFW. After appearing in a much-discussed Lane Bryant lingerie commercial in 2010 at age 22, Graham was thrust into the spotlight. She’s been featured on billboards in Times Square, in the pages of Vogue and as one of the first curvier models in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She’s also put herself forth as an activist, giving a TedX Talk about how the term “plus size” makes her feel like an outsider in the fashion world. Her presence and overall message is especially important in the fashion industry, where super toned supermodels constantly appear on social media and magazine covers and in movies and music videos. People might not be letting go of the phrase “plus size” anytime soon, so Graham aims to change the conversation. She’s the face of a new generation of models, designers and celebrities who are rejecting the so-called skinny ideals and encouraging the public to embrace all kinds of women. Next up? Conquering New York Fashion Week. A handful of designers, like Chromat and Zana Bayne, have included models with curvier frames on the their runways, but they’re few and far between. Graham wants to take that a step further by designing the collection and walking in the show. “Every woman in the show has a completely different shape and we wanted to show diversity of shape and ethnicity and that’s what curvy women are,” she says. “We are all shaped so differently, we are all different ethnicities.” Denise Bidot, a Puerto Rican/Kuwaiti model, who opened the Chromat Show in 2014, told Elle that she felt the 2014 fashion week set the bar high. “Finally, it was exactly what we’ve been begging the industry to do, which is just to stay a part of it.” But Graham doesn’t think it’s changing fast enough. “If we have more people talking about what media has told us is bad, like cellulite and rolls, then more people are going to love the skin they’re in,” Graham says. “Between ads like ‘this is the perfect body’ or you’re seeing the ‘skinny salad’ or jeans that tell you how to get the perfect butt, the media is still brainwashing.” Graham isn’t alone. Actress Melissa McCarthy, who said designers wouldn’t dress her for the Oscars because of her size, launched her own clothing line for women of all sizes, Melissa McCarthy Seven7 earlier this year. It’s now sold on HSN.com, where more than 1,400 jeans were sold in the first two hours it launched. “I just think, if you’re going to make women’s clothing, make women’s clothing. Designers that put everyone in categories are over-complicating something that should be easy,” she told Refinery29. Graham notes that designers typically use samples made for size zero or two on the runway, so it takes more work to make something specific and special for a curvy model. Meaningful change won’t happen at NYFW unless designers adjust their process first. “It was not inclusive for a girl like me,” she says. “I think now things are really changing.”

| People Are Scalping Tickets to the See the Pope at Central Park Posted: 11 Sep 2015 02:21 PM PDT About 40,000 lucky New Yorkers won free tickets to see Pope Francis cruise through Central Park on Sep. 25, and several of them have already taken to Craiglist to attempt to resell them them. Some people are asking for as much as $5,000 for a pair of tickets for the event, which is really just an opportunity to see the Pope’s motorcade swing by. Others are looking for $2,000 while some will simply accept the best offer. Someone else is promising to donate whatever profit he gets to a friend who suffered sexual abuse by a Catholic priest, New York magazine reports. Oh, and some people are really loading their posts with all the relevant key words, like the person who posted: “Pope Francis Central Park Procession NYC 2 Tickets Catholic Jesus New.” The New York City mayor’s office told New York that these listings will all be removed, so you’ll need to act fast. | This Video of a Dancing Doodle Is The Perfect Energy Boost Posted: 11 Sep 2015 02:02 PM PDT What do you get when you combine a pen, paper, and Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September”? A video of a dancing doodle that you can’t help but watch on repeat. YouTube user Brian de Vera posted the clip with the caption, “a look inside my college notebook.” Using flip-book-esque animation, he makes his hand-drawn character bust some serious moves. The little guy even knows how to twerk. This is the perfect way for all doodlers to put those absentminded drawings to use. Not to mention that recent research has shown doodling has some great mental health benefits. It can help you focus, understand new concepts and absorb information. Sunni Brown, author of “The Doodle Revolution,” says that the drawing practice is “a thinking tool.” Apparently, it’s also good for teaching people the latest dance crazes. |
| Why People on Twitter Are Blaming Drake for Serena Williams’ U.S. Open Loss Posted: 11 Sep 2015 01:08 PM PDT Canadian rapper Drake and tennis star Serena Williams have been the subject of dating rumors for a few months now, but all that speculation took a negative turn after Williams lost to Roberta Vinci in a shocking upset at the U.S. Open. Twitter users started blaming Drake, who was at the game, for Williams’ loss using the hashtag #BlameDrake. How quickly the tables turn: earlier this summer, Williams rolled her eyes when asked if Drake was her “lucky mascot” and said he was “just like family.” |
| Watch This Little Girl’s Priceless Reaction to Seeing Her Dad After the First Day of School Posted: 11 Sep 2015 12:35 PM PDT After her first day away from her parents, a little girl appeared to be overjoyed when her dad came to pick her from school. The video, posted by YouTube user xxMIA METALxx, starts with the dad filming his baby daughter wandering around her classroom before she realizes he is there. He then walks over to the half-open classroom door where he calls out to her, “Hey, baby girl.” The little girl gets excited right away and runs over squealing to see her dad. She was clearly ready to head home for the day. |
| Watch Siri Interupt a White House Press Briefing To Field Iran Question Posted: 11 Sep 2015 10:48 AM PDT Siri, Apple’s virtual personal assistant, chimed in to answer a reporter’s question about the United State’s policy on Iran at a White House press briefing on Thursday. Press Secretary Josh Earnest was preparing to field a question from a reporter about the Iran nuclear deal when Siri’s question-recognition beep could be heard throughout the room, reports Fox News. The reporter continued to ask about whether President Barack Obama was disappointed by the lack of Republican backing for the agreement when the digital voice spoke up. “Sorry, I’m not sure what you want me to change,” Siri said. The timely interruption was met with laughter from both Earnest and reporters. |
