Meet The Bionic Model Who Walked In New York Fashion Week

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 08:23 AM PDT

Rebekah Marine isn’t entirely bionic, but she still calls herself The Bionic Model. And at this year’s New York Fashion Week, she sparked a serious conversation about “disabled” models when walking at the FTL Moda runway show.

“Growing up, I was just such a ham for the camera,” Marine told TIME. “Modeling was a natural choice for me.”

Born without a right forearm, the 28-year-old wasn’t a natural choice for fashion labels that were hesitant to hire her. But four years ago, she became an ambassador for Touch Bionics and was given the i-limb quantum, an advanced prosthetic arm that moves according to her muscle movements, just as a hand would. She decided not to look at her missing arm as a disability but to embrace it. Her first big break came with Nordstrom in 2015 when she modeled for the store’s anniversary catalog. Her career hasn’t slowed down since.

Marine is also an ambassador for the Lucky Fin Project, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness and supports children born without a limb. As an ambassador, Marine travels around the country giving motivational speeches to children with limb differences. She decided that missing an arm wasn’t a crutch, but a beautiful way to help other people with disabilities embrace their beauty and embrace their aspirations.

Marine walked the runway this past Sunday with confidence in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Station along with other disabled models with prosthetics as well as Madeline Stuart, who made headlines as the first model with down syndrome to walk in NYFW. The show was produced by Ilaria Niccolini Production. This season, Marine walked for the labels Anna’s Loud and Archana Kochhar.

“I think it’s so cool to be at the front of the line of this change, and being able to open the door and inspire others to open their minds to different models,” Marine said.

Watch Ariana Grande Absolutely Slay Impressions of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 08:06 AM PDT

On Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show, Ariana Grande let her vocal range do the talking when host Jimmy Fallon challenged her to a game of Wheel of Musical Impressions.

The 22-year-old singer started off with an on-the-nose rendition of Britney Spears singing “Mary Had A Little Lamb.” She then went on to completely nail “The Wheels on the Bus” in the style of vocal queen Christina Aguilera.

Fallon and the audience were blown away by Grande’s Xtina impression.

“We should just stop the show there; I don’t know how we can continue,” Fallon said. “That is unbelievable. Wow, I want that recording.”

The host added his own impressions of Aaron Neville singing OMI’s “Cheerleader” and Sting crooning The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Grande’s final challenge was to emulate Celine Dion performing “Cant Feel My Face.” She at first seemed unsure about how to imitate the Canadian artist’s voice, but once she started singing, it was clear her worries were unfounded. Fallon chimed back in with his Sting impersonation of the song and the two executed a flawless duet.

“I love this game,” Grande exclaimed.

Miss Piggy and Kermit Team Up With Joel McHale, Viola Davis and Julie Bowen to Promote the Emmy Awards

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 07:53 AM PDT

The news cycle has been full of reports over Miss Piggy’s and Kermit the Frog’s very public break up and both of them have come out with new relationships, including Miss Piggy’s tryst with singer Josh Groban. So it’s a bit of a surprise to see them lunching together in a new video—but whatever it takes to promote the Emmy Awards.

In the clip, the exes do their best to behave civilly towards each other. But Miss Piggy, noted feminist, can’t behave civilly towards Modern Family star Julie Bowen when she delivers the ultimate insult in the form of a bottle of champagne. Luckily Viola Davis manages to escapes the pig’s wrath, because not even Miss Piggy would dare to mess with the How To Get Away With Murder star (unless she owed Miss Piggy money, of course).

In the wake of Miss Piggy’s outburst the paparazzi show up and the only one who can comfort Kermit is Community star Joel McHale, who has no problem with green people at all.

There Is Now a Dating App for Bacon Lovers

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 06:00 AM PDT

Oscar Mayer‘s latest gimmick is a dating app to help bacon lovers meat one another. The puns are endless, as one of tag lines for this program, aptly dubbed Sizzl, is “giving new meaning to the term ‘bacon-wrapped dates.'”

Oscar Mayer

The free iOS app allows users to create a profile that answers these questions:

What kind of bacon do you love the most?
Pork
Turkey
Both

What type of bacon do you prefer?
Hardwood smoked for a really long time
Thick Cut, because more is more
Maple and sweet like me
Lower Sodium!

If a friend tried to serve you bacon flavored with liquid sodium, you’d…
Stick it in their eye
Eat it politely, even though it’s clearly not that good
Discreetly crumble it in your napkin

How do you like your bacon cooked?
Chewy
Crispy
Burnt

If you’re on a date and there’s one strip of bacon left, you…
Take it, obviously
Generously give it away
Split it

The app uses GPS to find other app users locally or nationwide, and similar to the way Tinder works, users “like” photos they find smokin’ (we’re talking about bacon after all), and if both “like” each other’s profiles, they are directed to a messaging platform where they can get to know one another.

The app will be available to download for six months. No word on whether the Wienermobile will provide transportation to first dates.

This Is Donald Trump’s Advice to a Young Daniel Radcliffe

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 05:20 AM PDT

Years before Donald Trump began his run for president, the billionaire met Daniel Radcliffe and said what the Harry Potter star describes as the most “Trump-ish thing.”

The meeting happened when the two crossed paths on the Tonight Show, Radcliffe said in an interview with The Big Issue. Radcliffe told Trump that he wouldn’t know what to say on air. “‘You just tell them that you met Mr Trump!'” Trump reportedly told Radcliffe.

Radcliffe, who recently endorsed Jeremy Corbyn’s accession to the top spot in the Labour Party, said he thinks Donald Trump’s candidacy may be a secret gambit to throw support behind Hillary Clinton.

“If Trump was secretly working for Clinton to help her win, what would he be doing differently?” he asked.

Watch Tim Cook Explain Why He Came Out As Gay

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 05:06 AM PDT

Apple CEO Tim Cook says he felt a “tremendous responsibility” to publicly come out as gay.

“It became so clear to me that kids were getting bullied in school, kids were getting basically discriminated against, kids were even being disclaimed by their own parents and that I needed to do something,” Cook told Stephen Colbert during a Tuesday The Late Show interview about why he opened up about his sexuality in a 2014 Bloomberg editorial.

Though many of the people he works with already knew he was gay, Cook says, his decision to speak up was inspired by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quote, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”

“Where I value my privacy significantly, I felt that I was valuing it too far above what I could do for the people,” Cook said. “I wanted to tell everyone my truth. Many people already know. For many people, it was no revelation. It’s like discovering something on your iPhone it’s always done but you didn’t quite know it.”

Cook also told Colbert that he isn’t thrilled about the all movies about his late predecessor, Steve Jobs. First, there was the 2013 film starring Ashton Kutcher, Jobs, and now there’s the upcoming Steve Jobs, which stars Michael Fassbender and hits theaters Oct. 9. (This month also saw the release of the documentary Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine.)

“I love him dearly and I miss him every day,” Cook said. “I think that a lot of people are trying to be opportunistic, and I hate this. It’s not a great part of our world.”

Others close to Jobs have given their approval, however, to the Fassbender film, which was directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and written by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network). Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said he felt like he was “actually watching Steve Jobs” and thanked the filmmakers for “getting it so right.”

Johnny Depp Honors Wes Craven, Calls Him ‘The Guy Who Gave Me My Start’

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 04:33 AM PDT

Speaking on Monday at a Toronto International Film Festival event, Johnny Depp paid tribute to the late director Wes Craven, whose 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street gave Depp his first major acting role.

“Wes Craven was the guy who gave me my start, from my perspective, for almost no reason in particular,” Depp was quoted as saying in Variety. “He was a good man – so rest in peace, old Wes.”

Depp, 52, was taking audience questions following a screening of his latest film, the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass, when one attendee asked him to reflect on working with Craven, who died in August at 76 after a battle with brain cancer. In discussing being cast in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Depp explained that it was actually Craven’s daughter, Jessica Craven, who handpicked the actor for the lead role.

“I read scenes with his daughter when I auditioned for the part,” Depp said. “I guess she had read with a bunch of actors, and after the casting sessions, she said, ‘No, that’s the guy.’ I always think of her for putting me in this mess, and certainly Wes Craven for being very brave to give me this gig.”

Depp also said that at the time of the audition, he was more focused on music than acting.

“I was a musician. I wasn’t really acting,” he said. “It was not anything very near to my brain or my heart, which is pretty much how it remains to this day.”

Jessica Craven, who was only 13 at the time she picked Depp for the role, eventually became a musician herself, performing with her half-sisters in the folk-rock band The Chapin Sisters from 2004 to 2010.

Anne Hathaway Is Bookies’ Favorite to Play the New Mary Poppins

Posted: 16 Sep 2015 03:34 AM PDT

With the news Monday that Disney is developing a new live-action musical film featuring Mary Poppins, people are already starting to wonder who could possibly play the practically perfect nanny.

And, it seems, some are already placing bets on the subject. BoyleSports, an Ireland-based online betting firm, announced Tuesday that Anne Hathaway is the current favorite to pick up Poppins’ bag and umbrella, with 6/4 odds.

Other actresses in “contention,” at least as far as bettors are concerned, are leading ladies with vocal chops like Emily Blunt (5/2), Amy Adams (7/2), Kristen Bell (11/2), and Anna Kendrick (10/1). More actresses who made BoyleSports’ list include Amanda Seyfried (12/1), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (16/1), Lea Michele (33/1), and Anna Camp (50/1).

The new film, which has Into the Woods director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt on board, will take place in Depression-era London, some 20 years after Disney’s classic 1964 Mary Poppins, and will draw from existing Poppins tales in the rest of author P.L. Travers’ children’s book series.

Songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) are on board to compose original songs and a new score for the movie, and David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi) is attached to write the screenplay. Head here for more details on the project, news of which first broke here at EW.
