Megan Fox Will Be The Newest Girl on New Girl

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 08:55 AM PDT

With New Girl star Zooey Deschanel on maternity leave, Megan Fox is stepping in to fill the vacant spot in the show’s Los Angeles loft setting.

The Transformers actress is taking a break from the silver screen for a recurring role in the fifth season of the hit Fox comedy, according to Deadline. She has signed on to play Reagan, a pharmaceutical rep who rents out Jess’ (Deschanel) room while she is away on jury duty. Fox will be introduced in the sixth episode of the season.

“It’s insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we just all have to accept it,” executive producer Liz Meriwether told Deadline. “I’ve been a fan of her comedic skills since This Is 40 and I’m so excited to have her on the show. We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part – she’s the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up.”

While we wait to see how Fox gels with co-stars Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris on-screen, we can be rest assured that Schmidt (Greenfield) is excited about the roommate switch up.

“This has been on my vision board since the pilot!” the actor tweeted on Thursday.

The Selfie Spoon Is Now a Thing That Exists

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 08:18 AM PDT

It has been said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Clearly that’s why Cinnamon Toast Crunch has introduced a “selfie spoon,” a selfie stick with a spoon at the end that extends up to 30 inches so cereal eaters can take photos of themselves while eating cereal.

The General Mills brand created this new spin on the notorious selfie stick to solve the first world problem of “choosing between eating and posting” a selfie, according to their ad.

To use the selfie spoon, narcissists just have to turn on the Bluetooth feature on their smartphones so the white remote will be recognized — there is one gray button that takes photos on Android phones, and one that takes photos on iOS devices.

Selfie spoons are free to order now on SelfieSpoon.com, though customers do have to pay for shipping and will likely pay in followers on social media.

See Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting Get Smothered in Puppies with Jimmy Fallon

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 08:04 AM PDT

On Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting lived out pretty much everyone’s lifelong dream of sitting in an armchair with a pile of golden retriever puppies.

Host Jimmy Fallon challenged The Big Bang Theory actress to “Pup Quiz,” a trivia game where answering a question correctly gets you a puppy. But answer incorrectly and your opponent gets a puppy.

Cuoco-Sweeting is so excited by the prospect of getting to hold the adorable golden retriever puppies that she starts crying tears of joy. Luckily for her, she wins the first dog of the game by supplying the correct answer to the question “What breed of dog is Scooby-Doo?” (Great Dane, obviously.)

Fallon answers his first question incorrectly, awarding Cuoco-Sweeting with a second puppy. Then the stakes get even higher when the game enters into “Double Puppardy,” a round where the number of puppies up for grabs doubles.

“I could die,” the actress exclaims. “I could die and just — this is it. This is it for me.”

By the end of “Final Puppardy,” Cuoco-Sweeting wins all the puppies and is, as expected, overcome with joy.

Here’s Your New Daily Show Host Making Fun of the Republican Debate

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 07:43 AM PDT

When Trevor Noah takes the helm of The Daily Show later this month, he’ll obviously be expected to offer lots of political commentary. (And hopefully be funny about it.) On Thursday night, the comedian shared a quick taste of his political shtick during an interview with newly-minted Late Show host Stephen Colbert.

Colbert asked Noah if he watched Wednesday night’s Republican debate, to which Noah replied, “Unfortunately, yes. That was one of the moments of regret.” According to Noah, no one said anything substantial during the three-hour event. To prove his point, he had Colbert ask him a policy-related question and then attempted to sum up the entire debate in his response.

Noah did a decent job, but he still has some pretty big, “Jewish Yoda”-shaped shoes to fill.

Trevor Noah Says Jon Stewart Is a ‘Jewish Yoda’

Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart’s advice to incoming Trevor Noah was apparently something along the lines of “Do or do not, no try.”

The new host visited The Late Show on Thursday night and told Stephen Colbert that his former boss is “like a Jewish Yoda.” When Noah asked what form the show should take under his tenure, Stewart said, “The Daily Show is what The Daily Show should be for you to be the best show you can make.”

Noah may not have known exactly how to interpret that advice, but he’ll get his first chance to try on Sept. 28.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Smooch on Kiss Cam

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 06:44 AM PDT

The Atlanta Braves’ “Kiss Cam” entertainment at Turner Field featured a famous couple Thursday night: former President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalynn.

The two were in their usual seats near the Braves dugout during a 5-0 loss to Toronto, and they received a loud cheer when shown on the video board. Carter kissed his wife and then gave a big smile as the cheers continued.

The Carters stayed around for all nine innings of the game.

Former President Carter, 90, announced last month he has cancer that spread to his brain.

Watch Lupita Nyong’o Answer Important Star Wars Questions in New Interview

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 06:36 AM PDT

It’s an important question for both Star Wars actors and fans of the franchise alike: What’s your favorite film in the franchise?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Lupita Nyong’o answered that (for the record, it’s The Empire Strikes Back) and other questions about the galaxy far, far away in an new interview with Vogue.

Nyong’o, who appears on the magazine’s October 2015 cover, took part in the Vogue “73 Questions” video series. During the rapid-fire Q&A, she weighed in on Luke Skywalker vs. Han Solo, C-3P0 vs. R2-D2, and how many CGI dots she had to wear on her face while playing her Force Awakens character, Maz Kanata.

In the magazine’s cover story, she said that playing a motion-capture character was “really bizarre and lots of fun.”

“I really enjoyed the fact that you’re not governed by your physical presence in that kind of work,” she added. “You can be a dragon. You can be anything.”

Watch above to see her answer those questions, plus what she thinks is the “most American thing ever,” and how she likes her pizza.

The Force Awakens opens in theaters on Dec. 18. You can read Nyong’o’s full Vogue interview here.

This Irish Setter Protected His Trapped Basset Hound Friend for a Week in the Woods

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 05:28 AM PDT

A story out of Washington state sounds like the perfect plot for Homeward Bound 2.

Two doggy pals, a setter (Tillie) and a basset hound (Phoebe), were recently reported missing, and a non-profit group in the area posted notices online asking for tips, USA Today reports. When someone called in that that they’d seen a “reddish” dog coming onto their property for several days and going back into the ravine she had come from, volunteers from Vashon Island Pet Protectors went looking in the ravine, in case it might be Tillie. Sure enough, when they called out her name, she barked in response, and they saw her peering over the edge of a concrete cistern. “We knew that meant Phoebe was inside the cistern,” the group posted on its Facebook page, “and every breath was held and every doggie prayer offered that the peek over the rim would somehow find her safe.”

Happily, Phoebe was okay: she was perched on top of debris that kept her out of the water. Tillie had apparently been standing guard over her for a week, leaving only to look for help at the property where she’d been spotted. Both animals were understandably hungry and cold, but perfectly safe. Let’s hope Tillie got a big bone as a reward for her loyalty.

Happy Birthday, Sophia Loren: See Vivid Color Photos of the Actress in the 1960s

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 05:00 AM PDT

LIFE photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt and Italian actress Sophia Loren enjoyed a long relationship not only as artist and subject, but also as friends. It’s not surprising then, that when Loren had a baby after several miscarriages and a highly publicized struggle, it was Eisenstaedt who visited her and her producer husband Carlo Ponti in Geneva, to document the new mother doting on her baby.

In Eisenstaedt’s images, Loren, who turns 81 on Sept. 20, appears simultaneously conscious of the camera and blissfully taken with little Carlo Ponti, Jr. In some, she poses as though she has done so a thousand times—because she has—and in others, Eisenstaedt captures her looking at her son as though he and his camera were thousands of miles away, back in LIFE’s New York office.

The photos could just as easily have constituted a fashion spread—a celebration of the primary colors, fitted turtlenecks, big glasses and even bigger hair that ushered in the 1970s. But the star is the woman who wears them, at ease with a photographer she trusts. When asked, last year, what Eisenstaedt captured in her that other photographers couldn’t, she told LIFE.com, “That I was a girl, joyful for her life, because she accepted anything that came with her work. Just being really, completely happy.”

Man Crashed Car Into Airport to Steal Jet, Police Say

Posted: 17 Sep 2015 05:55 PM PDT

A man with a history of mental illness crashed a car into a security gate in Waco, Tx. in an attempt to steal a jet, police say.

The Waco Police Department posted on Facebook that the man gained access to the tarmac of the Waco Regional Airport after crashing through the gate. He reportedly tried to break into a parked Lear Jet. Workers nearby noticed the man’s attempts and alerted an off-duty officer, who tazed and later subdued the man with the help of bystanders.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation. Officers say he may have been under the influence of drugs during the incident.
