Kanye West Surprised Taylor Swift With a Gigantic Bouquet of Flowers After the VMAs Posted: 05 Sep 2015 07:56 AM PDT The Taylor Swift-Kanye West friendship was fortified Friday. Less than a week after the singer presented her former VMAs nemesis with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Swift received flowers from hip-hop star West. It’s quite the floral arrangement. After the introduction, Swift stood by Kim Kardashian West during Kanye’s sprawling 10-minute-plus speech. It concluded with the 38-year-old announcing his intention to run for President in 2020. Swift seems to have aligned herself as the vice president on the star’s ticket, given the hashtag choice. (Alas, like any presidential candidate, a veep candidate has to be at least 35. Swift will be 31 by a January 2021 inauguration.) Five years out might be early to pick a running mate, but #KanTay2020 will have tons of momentum by time that election comes around.
Kite Surfer Critically Injured After Being Blown Onto Highway Posted: 05 Sep 2015 07:50 AM PDT (SAN FRANCISCO) — A kite surfer at a San Francisco beach was caught in a huge gust of wind and dragged across a parking lot on to a highway, where he was hit by a car and critically injured, police said. The man was setting up his rig at the edge of the water on Friday afternoon at Ocean Beach when the wind caught him and took him onto the Great Highway, city police said in a statement. Winds of about 35 mph with gusts approach 50 mph were blowing on the beach at the time. Steve Sutherland, 54, was visiting from Minnesota and said he was watching when the huge gust came. “He was down by the water getting his stuff ready with his girlfriend, but there was just too much wind,” Sutherland told the San Francisco Chronicle. “It picked him up and took him toward the road. He bounced a couple times, and then I lost sight of him. But whatever happened after that it wasn’t good.” The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with critical injuries, police said. Police did not release the name of the injured man or give any details about the person or car that hit him, saying only that the person stopped and did not leave the scene. Kite surfers use large, parachute-like kites that capture the wind like a sail and pull them on surfing-style boards. Cort Larned, co-owner of 101 Surf Sports in San Rafael, California, said accidents in the sport are rare but usually happen in the same circumstances, with heavy winds at the water’s edge. “All the accidents happen almost invariably while getting into the water or getting out of it,” Larned told the Chronicle.
The Shortest Man Ever Measured Has Died Posted: 04 Sep 2015 02:47 PM PDT The shortest man ever measured has died at 75, standing just 21.5 in. tall. Chandra Bahadur Dangi, the Nepalese man who held the Guinness World Record for shortest living man and for smallest man ever measured, died Friday in a hospital in American Samoa, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed his death in a statement. Last year, Dangi met the world’s tallest man, Sultan Kösen, at an event in London. Kösen, who is 8 ft. 3 in. tall told the Telegraph that despite their height differences, he and Dangi “have similar struggles.” “I look into Chandra’s eyes, I can see he’s a good man,” he said. “It’s been a lifelong dream to travel and becoming a Guinness World Records title holder has enabled me to do that,” Dangi told the Telegraph. “It makes me extremely proud to represent Nepal all around the world, I’m extremely humbled by the support I receive.”
Chicken That Stopped Rush-Hour Traffic Is Now Part of a Custody Battle Posted: 04 Sep 2015 12:20 PM PDT (OAKLAND, Calif.)—Three people are claiming ownership of the small brown chicken that fouled up rush-hour traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area earlier this week. The Oakland Tribune reports Friday that the Oakland Animal Shelter has the chicken that strutted between cars at the Bay Bridge toll plaza early Wednesday. She was eventually captured by the California Highway Patrol. Animal Services Director Rebecca Katz says people claiming ownership of the chicken, named Chip in a nod to the CHP, need to come to the facility with proof, such as previous photos of the famous foul. Two rescue groups are also interested in Chip. On Thursday, Chip laid an egg. But the shelter will likely swap in a substitute egg for her to sit on, because it doesn’t want any more chickens.
Watching a Baby Tortoise Eat Applesauce Is Oddly Soothing Posted: 04 Sep 2015 12:17 PM PDT If you’re in the mood for something cute, we recommend turning your attention to this video of a baby tortoise enjoying applesauce for the very first time. This tiny little fella is named Herman and though he seems a bit skeptical at first, he soon realizes how delicious applesauce is, and starts taking huge bites. “He’s 2 months old and we’ve only had him for a week,” owner BJ Massey explains. “But the store we got him from informed us he’d only eaten re-hydrated pellet food, so we’ve been spoiling him with Kale, Bok Choi and (unsweetened, pure) apple sauce.” Read next: Super Chill Tortoise Is a Skateboarding Pro
Kellogg’s Honors Elizabeth II’s Record Reign With Cereal Fit for a Queen Posted: 04 Sep 2015 11:38 AM PDT It’s a breakfast fit for a queen. On September 9, Queen Elizabeth will assume the title of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, surpassing her great grandmother Queen Victoria after ruling for 63 years and 7 months. And how can we celebrate such a historic occasion? Why, with cereal, of course. Brian Houey, author of At Home with the Queen, recently revealed to PEOPLE what an average day in the life of the Queen looks like, including morning baths, poring through government documents, drinking tea and, apparently, eating cornflakes. And so, Kellogg’s has decided to commemorate her highness’ cereal preference with a limited edition version called “Queen Flakes,” available only in Manchester’s Black Milk Cereal Dive (a cafe dedicated entirely to cereal) for a cool £6.30. What makes this product so royally special? It’s classic Corn Flakes mixed with macadamia nuts (a favorite of the Queen’s) as well as edible diamonds and pearls. We can’t say we’re fancy enough to know what edible diamonds taste like, but it just might be worth a trip across the pond to find out. This article originally appeared on People.com
| Caitlyn Jenner Says She Wasn’t Always In Favor of Gay Marriage Posted: 04 Sep 2015 10:23 AM PDT Though Caitlyn Jenner still identifies as Republican, she admitted on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she has softened on issues like same-sex marriage. In the below pre-taped clip from the talk show’s Tuesday premiere, Jenner said that she was initially not behind same-sex marriage. “I’m a traditionalist. … I kinda like tradition and it’s always been a man and a woman,” said Jenner. But, she added, those views have evolved. “As time has gone on, I think a lot of people on this issue have really changed their thinking here to, ‘I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.’ That’s not my job, okay? If that word — ‘marriage’ — is really, really that important to you, I can go with it,” Jenner said. Host Ellen DeGeneres pressed Jenner to explain her position on the use of the word, because “obviously ‘marriage’ is an important word because marriage is marriage and equality is equality, so we want the same word everyone else has.” That said, Jenner insisted that she’s “on board” and “okay” with same-sex marriage: “I don’t want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.” Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai will also appear during Ellen’s premiere week when the new season kicks off Tuesday.
