Posted: 19 Sep 2015 09:42 AM PDT

Play “Uptown Funk” over practically any silver-screen dance routine, and you’ll be amazed at how well it works, proves a five-minute mega-montage of dance scenes set to the pop hit.

In this video from What’s the Mashup, the song by Mark Ronson with Bruno Mars fits with a dizzying array of dance styles, from moonwalk to disco to twerking. The scenes, cut from 100 movies, are just as varied. Simba, Timon and Pumbaa strut to “Uptown Funk” in the Lion King just as fluidly as Magic Mike strips to it and the cast of Slumdog Millionaire Bollywood dances to it.

Chinese Sperm Bank Ads Urge Men to Donate Sperm to Afford iPhone 6S

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 08:46 AM PDT

New advertisements from sperm banks in China are claiming that men can afford the latest iPhone by donating sperm.

“No need to sell a kidney…Shanghai sperm bank can make your iPhone 6S dream come true,” reads one ad from the Shanghai Sperm Bank. According to The Guardian, the bank is offering 6,000 yuan ($942) for 17 milliliters of semen from qualified college graduates who are taller than 5’5 and free of disease.

The kidney reference in the ad hearkens back to 2011, when a 17-year-old boy gave his kidney in exchange for an iPad and iPhone. This week, in advance of the Sept. 25 release of the latest iPhone 6S from Apple, two men reportedly tried the same tactic.

The sperm bank ads have sparked both interest and controversy on social media, but apparently, they’re working. In a poll of social media users on China’s version of Twitter, Sina Weibo, about 20% disapproved of the ads, while 27% said they’d donate immediately, The Guardian reported.

Rhino That Could Paint Dies at Denver Zoo

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 03:39 PM PDT

A 21-year-old black rhinoceros who could make paintings by holding a paintbrush in his mouth has died at the Denver Zoo.

Mshindi, who had chronic painful foot problems, was euthanized Wednesday after he “lost his quality of life,” according to a post on the zoo’s Facebook page. He was famous for making paintings that were sold to raise money for animal conservation.

“This is very hard for all of our staff,” zoo official Dale Leeds told CBS. “We’ll miss him terribly, but we knew this was the right thing to do.” The median life expectancy for black rhinos in North America is 17.8 years, according to the zoo’s Facebook.

This Trick ‘Google’ Site Is Bringing Attention to the Refugee Crisis

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 02:06 PM PDT

To get millennials to turn their attention to the refugee crisis facing Europe’s borders, one satirist tries to explain the situation using technology they can’t turn away from for long: Google and its apps.

The site tricks them into trying out a “fortune-telling” Google app, but as people start typing, a computer finishes their sentences with the kind of queries they should be making, such as questions about where these individuals will be relocated and whether they will be united with their families. Then this screen appears, directing people to donate to charities and spread the word to people they know:

Move, Get Out the Way of Ludacris’s Exciting D.C. Adventure

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 01:57 PM PDT

Ludacris performed at a fundraiser for the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night. And, thanks to his Instagram, we’re happy to report the rapper has been taking full advantage of his trip to our nation’s capital.

On Friday afternoon, a Wall Street Journal reporter tweeted that Luda was at the White House, but he didn’t know why. Well, we know why: to have the time of his life, obviously. He posted Instagrams throughout the day documenting his rollicking D.C. adventure.

And, as you can see, eventually Luda moved from the White House down to the (down to the) Supreme Court.

Atlanta Hawks Roll Out Ashley Madison-Themed Marketing Campaign

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 01:24 PM PDT

The Atlanta Hawks unveiled a marketing campaign inspired by Ashley Madison, the recently hacked site targeted at people looking to have an affair, to promote their new 10-game flex ticket plans.

By hiring three people named Ashley Madison, two females and one male, to execute the campaign, the team hopes to boost excitement for the 2015-16 season. One Ashley Madison stars in a commercial trying to entice fans into a love affair with the Hawks.

I’m Ashley Madison,” she says. “Have you had a little rough patch with your first love? Maybe they just don’t deliver the excitement you need anymore. Feel the rush of a new relationship with the Atlanta Hawks’ flex plan. Ten nights of pure unadulterated excitement. And don’t worry, your old team never has to know.”

There’s even a hotline, 855-HAWK-LUV, that uses a recording of a woman with a sultry voice to connect you with ticket representatives.

“We were talking about how we wanted people to have a love affair with us, and we thought this was a playful way to do it,” the team’s chief executive officer Steve Koonin told ESPN. “Everyone thought it was a good idea, which actually scared me.”

The campaign seems like a throwback nod to Taco Bell’s 2014 attempt to promote their new breakfast menu by taking a stab at McDonald’s. The fast food chain hired people named Ronald McDonald to express their love for Taco Bell’s morning offerings with lines such as ““I’m Ronald McDonald and I love Taco Bell’s new breakfast.”

Ice Cube Will Play Scrooge in a New Christmas Carol Reboot

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 12:44 PM PDT

Ice Cube is already known for his “trademark scowl,” so really, he should have no problem playing iconic curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge in an upcoming A Christmas Carol reboot. The new film will be called Humbug and will offer a contemporary retelling of the Charles Dickens classic, Deadline reports.

The rapper’s version of Scrooge will be a wealthy real estate mogul, but otherwise, the story sounds like it won’t change too much. The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future will all visit him, lead him to redemption, and so on.

Ice Cube has been busy with this summer’s Straight Outta Compton, which documents his time with the hip hop group N.W.A. He didn’t actually appear in it (his son played him) but he did produce it.

There’s no official release date for Humbug yet, but Deadline speculates that it could be out in 2017.

A Taken Prequel TV Series Is In The Works At NBC

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 12:09 PM PDT

NBC announced a straight-to-series order for a prequel based on Taken, the 2008 action thriller starring Liam Neeson, according to Deadline. The box office hit spawned a franchise that includes two sequels, Taken 2 and Taken 3, and arguably one of the most quotable lines of all time.

Centering on a young Bryan Mills, played in the movies by Neeson, the series will focus on the character before he becomes a retired CIA agent on a quest to save his kidnapped daughter. It will tell the story of how Mills came to have this famous “particular set of skills.” Intriguingly, the show will be set in modern times rather than decades earlier, skewing the timeline of the story.

Luc Besson, who co-wrote the films, will serve as the reboot’s executive producer. However, the show is still searching for a series writer and showrunner.

This Priest Made a LEGO Model of the Vatican for the Pope’s Upcoming Visit

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 11:49 AM PDT

A massive LEGO model of the Vatican is on display at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in honor of the Pope’s upcoming visit to the United States.

Father Bob Simon spent about ten months creating this brick version of St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square, the Associated Press reports. He began construction in his rectory at the St. Catherine of Siena church in Moscow, Pennsylvania, (about 100 miles north of Philly), basing the model off of a book cover image and watching YouTube videos to figure out how to make the basilica’s round shape.

While he is not sure how many pieces he used to make this replica, he told CBS Philadelphia that he may have used as much as half a million— including about 44,000 cobblestones in the square, “6,000 round bricks that make up the colonnade” and “12,000 2×2 tiles” under that.

The sculpture is part of an exhibit on the history of the Vatican opening at the Franklin Institute on Saturday.
