Watch a Skateboarder Zoom by Cars at 70 MPH

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 09:53 AM PDT

A professional downhill skateboard racer, Zak Maytum of Boulder, Colorado, stars in video of himself — filmed from behind — as he flies down a road at 70 mph.

In just under three minutes — and to the tune of Metallica’s “The Four Horsemen” — Maytum can be seen soaring past the occasional car, uploaded by sporting goods brand Venom Bushings.

While the video shows Maytum emerging from this stunt unscathed, he has had his share of injuries, once breaking his foot and collar bone and slamming into a guard rail, according to an interview he did in March.

Taylor Swift Beats Kim Kardashian to Become the Most-Followed Person on Instagram

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 09:50 AM PDT

Taylor Swift might just be the most popular person on the planet.

In addition to her sold-out tour stops, record-breaking 1989 album, which spawned three Billboard No. 1s (and counting), the singer’s now the queen of social media, too: On Tuesday, she usurped Kim Kardashian West‘s title as most-followed Instagram user. (As of Wednesday, Swift had 45.7 million followers, while Kardashian West lagged with a paltry 45.6.)

While the “Wildest Dreams” singer, 25, tends to posts pics of her cats, kitchen creations – and her star-studded squad, West’s social media formula differs. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, 34, floods her feed with selfies and shots of her famous fam.

See the World’s Largest Mural

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 09:43 AM PDT

French artists Ella & Pitr have completed the world’s largest mural in Norway as part of the NuArt street art festival that opened last weekend.

“Lilith and Olaf”, which measures 21,000 square meters (225,000 square feet), appears to depict a crunching girl with red toe nails accompanied by a much smaller figure. The mural was painted on the rooftops of Norwegian industrial buildings.

The artists are known for fun painting large-scale murals with an emphasis on making them fun in public places across the world.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara Are Destined for Heartbreak in the Trailer for Carol

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 09:30 AM PDT

There is a model train in the opening seconds of the trailer for Carol, and it doesn’t take long to ascertain its destination: Heartbreak City. Director Todd Haynes’ adaptation of the 1952 Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt tells the story of a love affair between two women in 1950s New York, and while an earlier teaser focused on their budding love, the trailer foretells its unraveling.

Cate Blanchett stars as the titular Carol, a smartly dressed, alluring woman trapped in a loveless marriage. Rooney Mara, whose performance earned her the award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, plays Therese Belivet, a young clerk who falls swiftly for Carol. Complications—the taboo nature of their affair, a doting but jealous husband and Carol’s responsibilities as a mother—hang heavy above their love.

Throughout the trailer, narrated excerpts of a letter from the older lover to the younger—“Everything comes full circle,” “You seek resolutions because you’re young,” “We gave each other the most breathtaking of gifts”—signify that we know the end before we’ve seen the beginning. Which is certainly, for a movie that looks this beautiful, no reason not to watch it unfold.

Carol opens in limited release on Nov. 20.

Connie Britton Just Revealed the Surprising Secret to Her Perfect Hair

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 09:07 AM PDT

Friday Night Lights star Connie Britton is constantly asked how she gets her hair so shiny, bouncy and perfect. In a new video, she finally reveals her beauty secret: feminism.

The video is part of the Representation Project‘s #AskHerMore campaign, which encourages reporters to ask women substantial questions about their accomplishments, rather than questions about their appearance.

“When used regularly, feminism has been known to produce amazing results,” the actress says. For example: a woman’s right to vote, a woman’s right to her own body, a woman’s right to become a kickass athlete, the Violence Against Women Act and more.

“The message of the video is: ‘Don’t be afraid of feminism,'” Britton told People. “Don’t think that feminism is something that you don’t need or something that could be threatening, because look at what it’s created already and look at what it can continue to create.”

A 58-Character Word Is No Match For This Ace Weatherman

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 09:02 AM PDT

A weather presenter for Channel 4 News in the U.K. is being hailed for nailing the pronunciation of a town in northwest Wales called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. In the approximately 20-second clip, Liam Dutton does not break a sweat as he highlights warm temperatures in the area.

One of the world’s longest place names, it was drummed up by a cobbler — or so legend says — as part of a publicity stunt in the mid-19th century designed to get train travelers to stop at the town’s railway station, according to the website for the village llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk/.

The page also claims the name means “St Mary’s church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St Tysilio of the red cave.”

Tina Fey Schools Seth Meyers and the Internet with an Amazing Dubsmash

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 08:39 AM PDT

Tina Fey may not be on social media, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know the joys of Dubsmash, the messaging service that lets users add music to videos recorded on their phones like, say, Beyoncé’s “Flawless”. A few weeks ago, Fey’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt co-star Titus Burgess stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers and talked about capturing Fey and Jane Krakowski lip syncing to the Beyoncé hit. While the video went viral because it, too, was flawless, Fey was unimpressed.

On Tuesday night she stopped by Late Night and decided to “teach the internet to care about itself more and raise its standards,” because according to Fey, “the internet has such low self-esteem it will settle for anything.” To school the internet, she unveiled the greatest Dubsmash ever, which comes courtesy of her former Saturday Night Live co-star Maya Rudolph. This is how the professionals do it, internet.

See How This Movie Poster Cleverly Hides a Bad Review

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 08:21 AM PDT

What do you do when you have a film poster to design and a bad review? Get creative.

A film critic for The Guardian noticed that a movie poster for Legend appears to make it look like he liked the film. The two stars that Benjamin Lee gave the film in his review fit perfectly between the heads of the two notorious British gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray, both played by Tom Hardy.

Of course, if moviegoers looked up the critique, they would likely be shocked that it was noted on the poster at all, given the review describes the film as “a disappointingly shallow take” that makes one feel, not “transported,” but “stuck on a tour bus,” and, to top it all off, argues that the narration is “lazy shorthand for a script that’s lacking in depth but overflowing with bad dialogue.”

Emily Blunt Had to Renounce the Queen to Become a U.S. Citizen

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Emily Blunt, star of the upcoming movie Sicario, stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday night, where she revealed that she recently became a U.S. citizen.

The British actress, who now has dual citizenship, shared lots of fun stories about the swearing-in ceremony. For example: Matthew McConaughey’s wife, Camila Alves, was also getting sworn in, so McConaughey showed up “looking like he was going on safari.”

Blunt also told Kimmel that she was required to renounce Queen Elizabeth II and, of course, take a written citizenship test.

“It is the hardest test I’ve ever had to take. I guarantee most Americans would have no idea how to answer any of these questions.”

Jimmy Kimmel Proves Nobody Knows the Names of Congress Members

Posted: 09 Sep 2015 07:54 AM PDT

“Congress was back in session today after a five-week summer break,” Jimmy Kimmel reported on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday night. And to prove that nobody is ever happy with Congress, Kimmel’s segment of Lie Witness News conducted interviews on the street to see how people felt and whether they could even name a Congress member.

Of course, in true late-night segment fashion, those interviewed were stumped. None of the people shown in the segment could name a member of Congress, and when presented with their “supposed” member, accepted the fake names provided.

“I can’t at the moment, no, that’s a good question,” one man says when asked if he can name one.

The interviewer offered up some fake names of Congress men and women, based on real people and fictional characters, including soap opera star Susan Lucci, Pokémon character Ash Ketchum, former NBA player Karl Malone, U.S. President Grover Cleveland and Harry Potter character Neville Longbottom.

“Representative Neville Longbottom, please bring the jobs back to the U.S., support our farmers and our small businessmen,” a woman pleaded.
